Det övergripande området i min forskning rör kognitiva funktioner, och då särskilt minnesfunktioner. Av särskilt intresse är luktprocessandets kognitiva aspekter. Här har mitt arbete främst fokuserats på episodiska luktminnen och dessas relation till semantiska minnesfunktioner (såsom exempelvis verbalitet och språkliga förmågor). Forskningen har främst koncentrerats till kognitiva luktförändringar över livscykeln, men inkluderar även barn och personer med neurodegenerativa sjukdomar (Alzheimers sjukdom och Huntingtons sjukdom).
Andra projekt kartlägger självbiografiska luktminnen (s.k. Proustianska luktminnen) där ett huvudsyfte är att utröna hur luktaktiverade minnen skiljer sig från visuella och verbala. Andra projekt fokuserar genetiska aspekter i luktprocessande där ett särskilt intresse är att kombinera genetisk information med hjärnstrukturvolym och studera dess relation till hur väl man minns och kodar luktinformation. Jag är också engagerad i det s.k. PART-projektet, en longitudinell epidemiologisk studie kring psykisk hälsa i Stockholms län. Här intresserar jag mig främst för sambanden mellan affektiva sjukdomar (depression, ångest) och kognitiva funktioner.
Min luktforskning stöds av Vetenskapsrådet. Jag har också ett nära samarbete med Lars-Göran Nilsson (PI) och Lars Nyberg med vilka forskningsplanen ”Memory, genetics, brain imaging and early diagnostics” med Betula projektet som bas, blev utsedd till stark forskarmiljö av Vetenskapsrådet år 2005.
Jag är även aktiv forskare och affilierad till Stockholm Brain Institute.
