Sadegheh "Farah" Moniri

PhD, Researcher

Main Research interests

My research is directed toward cognitive psychology in general, with specific focus on four main areas:

  1. Memory systems, especially implicit memory, semantic memory and episodic memory
  2. Bilingual memory organization
  3. Acquisition and processing of the second language
  4. Consequences of bilingualism on cognitive functioning

Teaching experiences

My teaching experiences during graduate studies include holding lectures about "Language" and "Sensation & perception" at the undergraduate level. I have also instructed and supervised undergraduate students in the memory laboratory sessions to design and perform experiments on implicit memory.

Currently I am holding lectures about “Language development and bilingualism” within a cognitive psychology course that I have organized for the undergraduate students.

I have also supervised five students in writing their undergraduate thesis in the area of bilingualism.

Personal information

I was born in Tehran, Iran. I completed my high school studies in natural sciences at the age of 16 and started the undergraduate program in psychology at Shiraz (former Pahlavi) University as one of the youngest students. When I was 20 and after receiving my B.A. degree, I moved to Japan for pursuing my studies at Kobe University where I received my M.A. degree in cognitive psychology. My research in Japan was focused on cognitive processing of Japanese as a second language. My M.A. dissertation examined the lexical and conceptual processing of second language as a function of language proficiency level. In 1985, I moved to Stockholm, Sweden, where I have been living since then. Following my research in bilingualism in Japan, I joined the Department of Psychology at Stockholm University where I defended my doctoral thesis in May 2006.

I know several languages (i.e., Persian, English, Japanese, Swedish, French, Arabic) with different degrees of fluency and have learned about cultural diversities in my life. This has made me more interested and more curious about the process of second language learning and multilingualism.
